UK's Premium Rate Numbers

The Premium Rate Numbers are telephone dial numbers for telephone calls which only accepts certain services. They are uniquely billed at a relatively higher rate than the normal calls. The Premium Rate Numbers calls are allotted from the special telephone regulations. They vary fro different countries and states.

The regulations are more organized in United Kingdom. The numbers are issued to the telephone service providers via the regulatory panel PhonepayPlus which was initially called the Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services (ICSTIS). This ensures that the recommended standards of the community are observed especially in charges and substance. Here, charges are offered as part of the ordinary telephone billing. This has also put the technology at place to counter any probability of criminals who could cheat the unsuspecting citizens. It also becomes necessary for business between the UK and the United States of America.

Some of the UK numbers such as 0870 and 0871 have been noticeably charged above the normal tariffs. The conventions and charges of these are undergoing revision to comply with the standards of the premium rate numbers after series of public unrest over the charges. More popular with the premium rates are the mature chat lines which are more explicit. There are, however, the enquiries on sports and TV shows, competitions, polls, weather forecasts and general postal or fact lists’ enquiries.
